It’s a sad day when you learn yet another cast member from Jaws has moved on from our world. Roy Scheider, aged 75, passed away yesterday due to cancer.
His career was a varied one. 1971 marked the beginning of Scheider’s presence on the big screen. His breakout performances were in Pakula’s Klute, where he played Jane Fonda’s pimp, and as Popeye Doyle’s partner in Friedkin’s The French Connection.
But who can forget his role as Chief Brody? I’ve seen that film an infinite number of times and, aside from Quint, Brody provides the most character. He’s a family man, terrified of boats, embarking on a quest to kill a man-eating shark. Schedier brought the perfect amount of humor and compassion to the role, making this character one of the most unforgettable characters ever to grace the screen.
This man has played countless other unforgettable characters too. He will be missed. Plan yourself a Roy Scheider marathon this weekend and be sure to include the following films:
- Klute (Alan J. Pakula, 1971)
- The French Connection (William Friedkin, 1971)
- Jaws (Steven Speilberg, 1975)
- Marathon Man (John Schlesinger, 1976)
- All That Jazz (Bob Fosse, 1979)
- 52 Pick-Up (John Frankenheimer, 1986)
- Naked Lunch (David Cronenberg, 1991)
