2008 Oscar Nominations

January 22nd, 2008 by Michael Ferraro

We may not be too sure if there is even going to be an Oscar show due to the writer’s strike (although the show producers insist there will be). Still, the nominations were announced this morning and unsurprising to anyone, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood lead the pack with 8 nominations each. Blood also marks the first nomination tossed out at Paul Thomas Anderson for direction.

There were only a few surprises, like Cate Blanchett picking up a Best Actress nod for her role in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. She was already nominated for that role the first time she played it (Elizabeth) back in 1998.

Even more surprising than what was nominated was the stuff that wasn’t. Sydney Lumet’s Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead got the complete shaft. Even Norbit somehow managed to score a nomination. Jonny Greenwood’s hypnotic score for Blood was also snubbed over Marco Beltrami’s 3:10 to Yuma score.

Enough with the pointless rambling and on to the big show. Here are the nominees:

  1. stina

seems rather bland/obvious to me. I hope There Will Be No Country For Old Blood Men win as many as possible.

    and Cate Blanchett.

  2. King Steve

How did American Gangster get passed up for Picture? Was Michael Clayton really that good?

  3. Michael Ferraro

Stina: Me too, although I am not sure about Cate Blanchett. She is nominated for a role for which she was already nominated for. Unless she wins for Bob Dylan.

King: American Gangster, as good as it was, was rather typical. Plus, the 5 nominees for picture (outside of Juno), are definitely worthy… unless Atonement got that one too.
