Sydney White (DVD)

January 21st, 2008 by Michael Ferraro

Judging a movie like Sydney White for having an unpredictable plot or for making some statement about college we haven’t quite seen before is something that shouldn’t be done. This movie isn’t trying to do any of that. It’s a PG-13 movie aimed at exactly who the rating suggests. Younger teenage girls will probably love this but anyone older or younger than that demographic is going to be pretty bored.

Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) is somewhat of a tomboy who grew up on construction sites, as she was raised by her dad since her mom died years ago, who is about to enter the wonderful world of college. All she wants is to be apart of the sorority house her mother belonged to, Kappa something or other, until she discovers it’s run by a bunch of spoiled bitches.

The obvious happens; the sorority sisters don’t take kindly to girls who show independence or speak their mind, so they kick her out. She ends up on the door step of a house dubbed “The Vortex,” a residence full of the college misfits and outcasts. These 7 dorks are rather hesitant at first about having an ex-sorority pledger in their midst but have a hard time not accepting a somewhat attractive girl into their house.

Sydney is still a bit peeved about not getting into her mother’s sorority and plans on doing anything she can to knock their president off her throne. So she runs for school president and what not, and the rest of the plot details you can probably fill in yourself.

Some of Sydney White was actually shot at my old alma mater, the University of Central Florida, but even that didn’t pull my attention in anymore than if it was shot anywhere else.

Director Joe Nussbaum began his career with one of the most notable short films ever made - George Lucas in Love (1999). A career of brilliant satire and hilarious comedy was sure to follow but alas, he never lived up to the potential. Films like Sleepover (2004) and American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile (2006) may have even been directed in his sleep. It’s like his creative brain cells were stolen by the Lucas camp immediately after the short came out.

I know, I know… whatever pays the bills. I’d surely have no problem taking a couple thousand to direct something like this. So, in that sense, good for Nussbaum. I he puts a kid or two through college with this.

The DVD contains a few extras barely stand strong enough to make a good impression. The typical gag-reel and deleted scenes are complimented with a few special features about both the Kappa house and the Vortex. You even get a special about the 7 dorks themselves.

Which reminds me, it’s no coincidence that this film is so reminiscent of Snow White. It is called Sydney White after all and has the main character being assisted by 7 characters, each with their own charming personality quirks (but none are as clever as Grumpy or Sleepy). Similarities to that story aside, it still manages to remind you of plenty of other films/stories as well.

Thanks for the compliments good sir.

And yeah, this movie just came out on DVD a few months after its brief theatrical run. Probably why you haven’t heard of it, but that’s a good thing…
